Tips From a Professional Gutter Cleaner

Professional cleaning of gutters is a great way to earn extra cash without much start-up investment. To an established company , i.e. window cleaning company, landscaping company, or property maintenance company, it’s also a perfect add-on service. What you need to do is to understand the finer points of gutter cleaning to set yourself apart as a true professional and not just a neighborhood kid.

1) You must ensure that your ladder is not dented to the customer’s gutters. The simplest way to do that is to line up your ladder with the hanger for the gutter. These supports are spaced evenly down the gutter length to give it support. You can bend the gutter if you position the ladder far down from one of these supports. Roofers In Brooklyn┬áhas some nice tips on this.

However, a better way is to ensure that the ladder doesn’t even touch the gutter. By using ladder stand-offs instead of the gutters the ladder will rest on the roof. I suggest using a stand-off called the Max Ladder. It is the only standoff conceived to be placed on the roof.

2) You will make sure that all the customer’s property is not filled with gutter waste. Some companies will blow out the gutters using leaf blowers. It will work if the gutter ‘s contents are dry. However, once all of the dried leaves have been blown out, you need to make sure that everything is raked up and carted out-either to another location or to a compost pile with the permission of the homeowner. I like to pick the gunk out by hand (of course wearing rubber gloves) and place it in a bowl. I wouldn’t recommend spraying the gutter with a pressure washer because it’s going to make a mess too big-gunk stuck to a customer house’s side won’t lead to future business.

3) Checking that downspouts of the gutter are working is important. The downspouts are the tubes that run down the side of the house and carry the rainwater down and off the roof. The true professional is flushing these out with a garden house to ensure that water flows through. The wire mesh guard at the top of the downspout is another matter to remember. Such guards strain the water to ensure no debris clogs the downspout. If there is one missing, be sure to add it. Of this reason, I still bring extra downspout filters inside my truck.

4) Offer whitening of the gutter as more operation. The word gutter cleaning conventionally refers to clearing the gutter’s inside out. But cleaning is also required on the outside of the gutter-only for esthetic reasons though. The exterior is often riddled with greenish algae and/or black algae streaks known as “tiger striping.” An extension pole and a soft bristled brush are the best way to clean these. I mix a bucket of water and a basic black, and drop the head of the brush into the bucket, then get up and clean the brush on the outside gutters. I rinse the gutters off finally with a hose. For this purpose, some gutter cleaners use a special product such as “gutter zap” or “gutter grenade.” I used bleach in the past, but problems may arise when you clean the gutters over a wooden deck-the bleach may drip and discolor the wood underneath.
